Speed kills. Is it time to reduce our national motorway speed limits?

The speed limits on Irish motorways is 120 km/h. In my opinion, it should be less. 100 km/h is more than sufficient, 120 km/h is mad man speed.

200 km of motorway travelling at 120 km/h will take 1 hour and 40 minutes to cover. Doing the same journey at 100 k.p/h will take 2 hours. A mere 20 minutes more.

You need lightning reactions if you are driving at such a stupid speed of 120 kph.

It is better to keep your distance, calm down and just take it easy. 20 minutes won't kill you but speed will. You will also reduce fuel consumption dramatically. Stay alive and slow down.

We need speed cameras the full length of motorways and more penalty points for reckless speeding.

A crash at 100kmh will have similar results to a crash at 120kmh.

How many lives do you think this will save OP?

You. can react quicker and 100 k.p\h

Dont drive on the motorway if you dont like the speed limit.

    No you can’t.

Reaction times are independent of speed.

120 k\p.h is a limit. not. a target. It. should be reduced to 100 k.p\h

As Jeremy Clarkson says, speed does not kill.

It's the very sudden stop that does.

I'm convinced these are Boards employees trolling trying to whip up activity on the site.

you will cover a greater distance by the time you react at 120 k\p.h

I think it should be raised to 140, and anyone that isn’t able to keep up should either take an alternative route or just stay at home. Motorways are the safest roads.

    This is true.

Time taken to react will be the same though.

Motorways are engineered to increase the to time available for reaction. Namely by decreasing entrances, eliminating curvature and the removal of oncoming traffic.

120km on most sections allows for far more reaction time than you would have for reacting to hazards on N series (100kmph) or the usual 50/80 rat runs.

Subjectivly I am far more relaxed at 120kmph on a motorway than I would be at 80-100 on an N route.

With proper engineering, education and policing then speeds far higher then 120 can be made safe. Take the oft cited limitless German Autobahn for example.

my mistake. You will cover a huge distance if you are driving at 140 k\ph when you react.
    Lethal speed.
    100 kph is sufficient

Modern cars with good maintenance, clear windscreens good lights at night and good well maintained eyesight and sobriety and health in our drivers is more than enough to allow 120 kph operations on our limited access divided lane motorways. These are our safest roads. Many of our former N class roads have been reduced to 80 kph from the former 60 mph general speed limit due to high casualty rates. Last years casualties were the lowest since records began in the mid sixties.

We need to make and set sensible standards that will be followed by most sensible people. Lowering the motorway speed limits to 100 kph would be a step too far. Making people follow the drive left pass right rule on multi-lane motorways and making slow drivers pull into the often empty left lanes would be a step in the right direction.

Well done Gardaí. More power. 100 kph is too much on a n road. It's not a race.

Ah I see our serial underbridge dweller has returned with a new attempt at a bit of controversy. Needs to try harder though, the same posting style and themes never fail to give you away.

    120kph is not that fast.

    k\ph.... wait for it.........

if you swap the \ for a /, you get k/ph...

    and the fog clears..

Of course you probably still don't recognize k/ph, even when in a thread about speed.. it's kilometres per hour.

Tarmac the whole country and remove all speed limits. Problem solved

    Lol, OP is banned already.

Motorways are incredibly safe. The only advantage of a lower speed limit would be fuel saving and the positive environmental impact from that saving.. I'd suggest that tact before the speed kills mantra.

No it doesn't. k/ph is just as meaningless.

It's km/h ffs, how difficult is it?

    120kph is not that fast.

I was humming along at 120 ish today, sitting behind a 1990 Suzuki swift. Drums on the back, no abs, skinny tyres.. still the same limit as my car.. their stopping distance must be far higher..

    Fuk dat.
