Buying a diesel - good or bad?

    Hi All any help with this I'd really appreciate it, apologies if this a been posted before, I change my car every 5 years or so, at the moment I'm driving a c4 grand Picasso, I'm hoping to maybe pick up a 2015 grand
    Picasso, buts what's putting me off is all the talk about diesel engines, and most people heading back to petrol and hybrid, problem is I need a 7 seater, won't find a petrol 7 seater around 2015 year, and I couldn't afford a new car, would I be better of driving my 2010 Picasso in to the ground, or buy the 2015. and hope the government doesn't go to town, and start to tax the life out of the diesel, because I will be holding on to it for a while,

    Diesel is still very much a thing. If you look at certain segments of cars, the sales are dominated by diesel. You can only buy used what people bought new.
    The government won’t penalise diesel drivers as they make up so many voters, and there aren’t many viable alternatives out there. Any action taken will likely be on new cars, and not rolled out to used cars.

    Until there's something alternative and reliable to diesel....and petrol I'd not worry. I've never had anything but a diesel car. BTW worse than the tax on a 7 seater is the insurance.... Ouch. I know I just insured one. Anyway needs must.

    That has nothing to do with the OPs query though :confused:
    This is about a specific VW model variant.

    Its rather clear that Diesel vehicles will be regulated off the road. They will be subject to more stringent testing in order to prove they are as clean as they claim to be, or as T6 prospective owners are finding out, they will not get their conformance certificates.

    The next facet of this will be weeding out those cars with dpfs removed and so on. Even Toyota are claiming PEV cars will be worth more than diesel in their radio adverts.

    I'm getting message, don't buy a diesel.

    But this has nothing to do with buying a used diesel MPV. This is one model here you’re referencing, not an entire brand even. It is very unusual for a new car to not get a CoC.

    Toyota are backing hybrid, they’ve got BMW building most of their diesels, that’s their strategy. I think they’re right long term to ditch diesel, but let’s not get too carried away here. The OP has a specific concern which is unfounded. There are few viable used alternatives in the MPV market unless you want a Nissan
    Vannette with a Leaf drivetrain.

    The important word here is "claim". It's consumerism at its best. If they tell you something long enough you start to believe nothing else.

    It totally has nothing to do with the fact that Toyota's current range of inhouse diesel engines in passenger cars are not going to meet new European emission tests and they are not investing in new diesel engines so they are trying to push hybrids onto people now for when the next generation of models are launched so that they have something to sell people.

    There is plenty of life left in diesel in this country, sales have peaked for sure but they will return to the sort of figures that were there before the Greens make them attractive with cheap tax. Diesels will still have a purpose for long distance commuting and business use while people who bought them but really didn't need them will revert back to alternatives. I'd say there is at least another decade at the very least left in them unless there is a huge revolution around providing proper EV infrastructure (not just in large cities), public transport (again outside large cities) and harmonise the tax benefits that currently only come with diesel vehicles for commercial use.

    I'm about to change to Diesel as the milage I am doing in the new job means its the only choice for me. If you are doing long milage it is the only choice at the moment.
