Extend gate entrance to house as 8 Ft tight for cars

    Hi

The entrance to the house in the city is 8 Ft between the pillars - and a gate hung on either side so this reduces it again. The car is usually reversed out and always need to be very careful not to clip either mirror on one of the gates.

I was thinking of taking away one of the pillars altogether and widen it to 9.5 Ft. But i just had a builder look at it and he said if I cut the pillar in half and plaster it up again. So i would gain 1 foot and the be 9 foot wide, with a gate hung on either side.

I think an extra foot should make a massive difference with cars going in and out ? what do you think ?

Should 9 Ft be okay or should I take the pillar completely and widen to 9.5 Ft?

    Thks

    You need planning permission.
What Council area are you in?

Hi 9ft is perfect for a car. Cut both piers in half and you'll be flying it. But u will have to get new gates also of coarse. And with only half a pier don't go for anything too heavy

And just to keep them legal, after Planning is obtained of course ;)

How long have you lived in the house?

I'm in exactly the same situation, same width, with brackets on 8ft high pillars that used to hold gates but gates taken away before I bought the house.

When we bought the house 3 years ago we thought that our first job would be to widen the entrance and the drive which is also 8-9 ft.

But after a while we got used to it and it's not a problem now even though you have to exercise a bit of care. To complicate it our driveway slopes up steeply towards the house but I can now reverse in without issue and move the car over to within 6 inches of the side wall and leave plenty of room to get out drivers side.

I always reverse in and my car is a fairly large saloon.

I have even reversed in a small rigid truck without issue. If you can live without the gates I would take them off.
