Quick question, for those of you that see a large increase in sales and traffic around Christmas, do you increase your advertising costs in January to try and pick up on sales in what we are finding is a generally quiet time.

We have bumped up our ad budget since our Jan sale ended and traffic has considerably dropped off, I've compared figures to early October and we are down about 25% in traffic hitting our site yet we have increased our advertising by about 50%

It would depend on what your selling. Sales of toys will always be slower in January than December and no amount of advertising will change that. What you can do however, is try and divert your customers, if they are going to spend, to spend it with you as opposed to your competitors.

Maybe take what you'd spend on advertising and use it for discounting instead?

What is your targeting? If you have just bumped your Google AdWords budget, your burning cash. Focus on your audience, not your budget. If you are not using facebook Pixel or have a good retargeting strategy, get that now. Start capturing your core customers and their data so that you can reach out to people who actually want and buy your services. You can then use this data to find your 'lookalikes' and build a very accurate advertising profile.

Another one we have seen success with is discounting at a later date e.g. Buy in December, get a free / discounted widget at the February midterm etc.
