Hi folks any Apple TV users out there using the Apple TV as a PVR client via the TV Headend client itself or via MR MC to record and play live satellite streams.

Would like to know your experience. Looking to get a box to combine saorview + satellite with Netflix and Plex/infuse.

I have not used it but the paid version of the Tvhclient for Apple TV looks very good and easy to use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eSpsWolu2M

Apple TV at 160 quid is a bit expensive for my tastes for non 4K version. Those Netflix 4K TV shows look stunning! So the extra €40/60 for the 4K version might well be worth it.

I have tried the TVheadend Android TV app that utilises the Android TV Live Channels facilities and it is not as robust as I would like to use for a daily driver. It also does not include access to recordings... So sadly I would not recommend this. I have it running on a Xiaomi Mi Box.. it may run better on a Nvidea Shield or a Sony Android TV, but I doubt it somehow as it appears that the software itself is not very solid. The Xiaomi box is < 100€ and does support 4K video on Netflix etc, but you will need a separate means of accessing tvheadend (RPi 3 (works 100%) or a DIY LibreELECE S905/S905X box (works 99%) (avoid the S905W boxes).

There is a tvheadend plug in for Plex, but I could not get it working properly on Android TV and it does not offer a full EPG. I gave up quickly though. When did plex stop being useful?

Thanks there is very little info on the Apple TV with TV Headend out there , I looked at that video in past .I thought it might be the silver bullet for my requirement. MR MC is also an option.

The info I've seen on android boxes with PVR seems to indicate there is bugs and ultimately not that reliable. I've read threads on issues on the Nvidia as well for live playback.

I was looking for a single box to give me PVR abilities on satellite & saorview with Netflix and Plex/other (with backend server)
Want to get a few of these for each room so I can set a recording from another room , watch live TV or Netflix or my plex content.

    Reliability is my main requirement.

Plex have PVR abilities but it looks like it's in it's infancy and full of issues.

The linux boxes seem to handle TV Headend the best but Netflix on then then has to be done through windvine with mixed reports.

I was thinking a sub €200 Linux box would suit my need as follow:

Give up on Plex and use Kodi with MySQL DB on server to track my video playback of stored content. Plex could be used but I assume the server would not need to be as powerful for Kodi as oppose to Plex .

Use Kodi to interface to TV Headend for file recording and live playback.

But then how do I play Netflix and what would I use for the hardware box? Is there one out there with Ethernet connection also.

    What do you use yourself?

My requirement stems from having low speed internet 15MB.
I don't want Kodi for all the other add-ons but want to really leverage free to air tv and combine it with some stored content of tv programmes along with Netflix.

I have one 4k LG TV and on that I use an Amlogic LibreELEC and Kodi tvheadend client for the Live TV/PVR. Using this cheap €35 box I can even access the Astra UHD demo channel which looks incredible. I use the LG WebOS Apps for Netflix, RTE Player, Amazon Video etc.

On my other 3 (dumb) HD TVs I use a Raspberry Pi LibreELEC and Kodi tvheadend for the Live TV/PVR and Chromecasts for Netflix etc .. There is no RTE Player for chromecast, but I rarely use that anyway.

I bought the Mi box hoping to get where you want to get with everything in one box, but the tvheadend app lets it down. Its not awful, the streams look good, but there is no access to the recordings. Probably I could share out the recordings using DLNA, but I still could not set recordings up.

In short, there is currently not one box that can handle all the functions of tvheadend plus all the VoD apps such as netflix. Except (maybe) the Apple TV.

I never considered the Apple TV but that might just do the job. I would not be surprised if MrMc struggles with HD Live streams. But that TVHClient app looks like it will do the job. I can't just justify spending 200 Euro on yet another client box, when I have pretty much everything that I need already working fine, albeit not on one box.

Yip I was suprised there is not one solution.
Plex PVR looks to be a future runner but it's well off the mark now.i think it's due to fact the demand has flipped to folks using IPTV on KODI boxes .

The Apple TV is the closest I can find.
Im wagering the 4k version processor on Mr MC could handle HD streams. Alternatively the previous version which is bit cheaper could be used.

There is zero user base for feedback from what I can tell though. Some threads here and there. The remote on 4k Apple TV is suppose to be terrible also.

Maybe I should go down the road of an enigma 2 box just for satellite , I think I'm heading down a 2 box solution either way now :

Enigma 2 or open elec with tv Headend for PVR
Roku or Mibox for Neflix and VoD apps.

2 boxes is a pain but I suppose the cost of a Mibox + Open Elec box is prob cheaper than one Nvidia shield or apple TV.
