Unsure if this is even the right place to post so mods remove and repost of you wish.
Have broken up with my partner of many years. I am left with a mortgage and kids. I can manage all the bills etc and because the car is his I need I buy my own one. I rang today for a loan and it was refused due to a loan not being paid. It was a joint loam we got from credit union that he had said he had been paying. I had no reason to believe otherwise as never once got a letter or statement from them. We had been living in separate addresses when they gave the loan and I was added to his account and wasn't even a member at that time. So the money he owed from his own account was added to the amount but at the time I didn't really understand the whole thing. All I knew was he was paying that while I was buying shopping and paying for everything the kids needed.
So now I have a bad credit rating and I don't know where to turn to. I'm willing to pay a share of the loan and never missed a bill or payment ever in my life so I am quite shocked that I wasn't notified of this and now we have split i will probably forever Be in bad credit. What can I do? Can anyone offer advise? I am in a bad place as it is, trying to keep a happy home but this has completely thrown me. Thanks for reading.

I would arrange a meeting with the credit union, I don’t know What they can do, but I’ve always found them to be very helpful and understanding.

I would arrange a meeting with a solicitor and get a maintenance order set in stone asap. I regret being "too nice" to do it years ago.

I work in a credit union and I would second going in to have a chat with them. They will be able to tell you more than we can. Due to very strict Data Protection Laws, you'll probably need to bring I.D with you so they can verify that you are the person named on the loan with your ex.

They will be able to explain the credit rating situation to you. Maybe they were sending letters and calling but he kept it hidden from you. If you were living in separate addresses at the time, it would have been easy to hide any correspondence from the CU as it would be addressed to him if it was his account. If it was a joint a/c and you were at different addresses then one address would have been marked for correspondence and he probably made sure it was his one they sent anything to.
I'm sorry this has happened to you. Call the CU and ask if you can make an appointment to speak to the manager or their credit controller. They are usually quite accommodating and nice.

Best of luck. I hope things go positively for you.

you should request copies of your application to become a member seek the photo id and signatures required too.

It sounds like there has been some fraud here if your not a member how can you just be added to an account?
