    hi
I am currently filling out an application form for assistant staff officer but I am finding the competencies very broad and not sure how to narrow it down, I am working at clerical officer grade III for last 9 months so will be applying via open competition.
Competencies listed are purpose and change, delivering results, personal performance and personal effectiveness.
I am struggling to narrow down an example for each. anyone have any tip tricks or examples they could give me that I could use to narrow down my own work experiences that would be relevant.
    thanks

Very difficult to help you without knowing what exactly your experience is but as a potential guide:

Purpose & Change: how you helped bring about and implement change. It is difficult for people at entry grades to bring forward change but you could certainly use an example of how you helped your manager/section implement change. i.e if a new IT system was introduced did you assist in rolling it out and training others; did you help roll out change to the general public, i.e by assisting with a new procedure or process.

Delivering Results: An example of how you engaged in a process that delivered a measurable result. Did you help reduce paper printing? Did you document work processes? Did you roll out convert a paper based system to an online system. Did you take on new responsibilities that made a difference? These are all potential examples

Personal Performance. An example here could be how you identified some personal improvement you wanted to make and how you done this through the PMDS process. Another example might be how your manager assigned additional responsibility to you based on how you carried out a different task.

Personal Effectiveness: Did you undertake any additional learning or training outside of work to help improve your performance. Maybe you unexpectedly had to deal with a difficult situation and done so well. Did you ever offer to take on additional responsibilities and went on to make an impact on something because of that.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for that input. I am working at clerical officer level for last nine months but previous to that I was team leader in a bank branch. I'm struggling to decide which career to use to show enough experience relative to the competencies but I think your examples above should definitely put me on the right track. The purpose and change competency was giving me writers block as they have broken it down into very council orientated examples like knowing section purpose and its priorities, maintaining a positive image of the council and understanding and adhering to the code of conduct for all employees.

I believe i'm applying for the same post as you elle. I wonder is there many jobs actually available for the assistant staff officer.. say a lot will apply for it, plus we are prob up against the grade III's working for the council already and who might be looking for a promotion.

Hi Skippy21, Grade IV jobs are surprisingly prevalent these days. I started in a new job as a Grade III in January and got promoted to Grade IV Assistant Staff Officer in April.

Hi mbarre. Do you not have to wait until you’re in the HSE a certain amount of time before you can get/ go for a promotion? Possibly heading to the HSE as a Grade IV soon but would be hoping for a V soonish.

Hi Skippy, I was employed as a Grade III Clerical Officer in January of this year and they promoted me in April to Grade IV as there was an internal job and I applied for it. I was the newest member of staff in the hospital and others who were there longer applied but didn't get it. I was dubious about applying as I was newly appointed.Once you're in, you can apply for higher level positions. A a Grade V would be achievable though but you need to have supervisory experience when applying for a V.
