Anybody any experience with either the Mk6 GTD or GTI.

Seems there is some value to be had at the moment with the "new" Golf coming out prices should drop a little further.

    Upgrading from a 2005 Mk5 GTI.

    Looking 2011 - 2013 age range.

    Thanks

You would be better moving to the mk7 with the mqb chassis, a completely new design and far superior to the mk6 which was just a facelift mk5.

I had my eye on a GTI for a long time and I think I'm about to give up. They hold their value too well and there is little value to be found in them imo. Base model 2013 mk7's with no extras are still going for over 20k. Any half decent mk6 isn't hugely less than that, and they're nearly 500 a year more to tax.

I'm looking at importing a MK3 Focus 1.6 turbo now, seems to me to be the best value reasonably hot hatch. It doesn't match the GTI for performance but it's not a million miles off, especially the mk6.

Since when is a 1.6 Focus (petrol? diesel?) a hot hatch? The equivalent Focus would be an ST.

@OP I would skip the MK6 too. It'll not feel like much of an upgrade over what you have. The MK7 appeared here first in mid 2013 but spec wasn't great - unless you find one where the original owner went to town on the options list OR you find a UK import. Irish spec's got a massive improvement eventually but it wasn't until late 2014, which might put it out of your budget.

Residuals on the GTI do hold fairly strong but I think you'd get a 2014 one for low 20's at this stage.
