Oil Boiler - puff of white smoke

Think my boiler may be in trouble.

    Boiler wouldn't start today.
Went to try ignite it few times.
    Cleaned the inlet filter.
After the inlet filter was cleared - tried it again and there was a puff of white smoke that started coming out near the ignition and what I thought was a shell of singed plastic.

Plugged it out fairly pronto and flicked off oil.
    Is it kaput?

could be any number of things

get somebody in the know to have a look for you

don't try firing it again you may have a build up of oil in the combustion chamber
