Hi everybody, my wife has recently decided to return to college. She is studying primary school teaching in DCU as a mature student and is currently in 2nd year. Before Christmas, she overheard other students saying that they are allowed to sub in schools during the summer. Is this true and how would someone go about finding schools.

How do you mean "sub over the summer?"Primary schools would be closed. Is it "July Provision" I wonder?

Colleges tend to finish up for summer in late April, early May. Therefore they would be available for the rest of May and June

There's a huge shortage of qualified subs this year, so she might get lucky. As an unqualified sub though, she will get the unqualified rate and cannot work for more than 4 days in any one school at a time. Has she garda clearance?

Yes Garda Vetted. Around how much would she get as she won't be working during the summer as she left her job when starting college. Would you know how she would go about finding schools? Is there anywhere you put your name down and schools will contact from there or is it a matter of contacting each school expressing your interest.

You can't go on the likes of text a sub if you are not a qualified teacher. She could email the local schools and tell them she will be available.

She should contact the Teaching Council to register as an unqualified sub so there are no delays in getting paid. She should approach schools a couple of weeks ahead of being available, giving her CV with Teaching Council number clearly on it. She should also beware that payment takes quite a while to come through when subbing.
