I'm considering going to have a look at a 2012 Skoda Superb 1.4 125HP. Would anybody know or have experience with these engines? are they still prone to timing chain failures like the older 1.4s from around 2008? or would this be a newer updated version of the engine?
    Thanks in advance.

I have that engine in a 2011 Passat. My chain was replaced under goodwill 1 year outside warranty by VW. They are very smooth, frugal (7l/100) and quick when pushed. We also have the 1.4 ACT 150 in a Superb and it is better again, quicker, smoother and more frugal than mine. They are so much more refined than any diesel. Assuming the chain is OK and you don't do mega mileage (diesel terratory) then I would highly recommend it.

This is OK - 1395 ccm and exhaust at the back:

This is not - 1390 ccm, exhause at the front. It was installed upto 2015 in various VAG cars...

I think 125 PS should be fine, it is 122 PS that is the previous generation... But check very carefully.

only did 4000km last year, that might go up to about 10000 this year driving to work more often. anyway way to tell if the chain is ok or not without any history?

Simply don't buy one with the chain... Get EA211 with the belt.

    Yes.

I've checked and Superb 2012 will come with CAXC - so EA111 engine. It is still much better than the Twin charger - but I would skip.

Any recommendations for other large petrol cars? Preferences would be saloon or estate, and a decent engine, 120hp ish. Budget of around 13k

Grogi knows his stuff but I think you should not discount the 2012. My chain started to rattle at 100,000km's. The new chain is an upgraded part so hopefully that in the end of it. If that chain has been (and a call to Skoda would confirm) done you should be fine.

Barring that one weak point the VW engine really is the best of the larger petrol cars in that segment.

    I always liked a Mondeo - Ford Mondeo 1.6 T EcoBoost.

Or only a bit smaller Golf Mk7 Estate 1.4 TSI (2012+)...
