Rats or Hamster breeders, or rescues?.

Hey, I haven't posted on this forum in a long time.. Thankfully in that time both my dogs and my cat have been in fair health, both dogs has Mass Cell Tumors removed and made full recoveries and the cat continues to scourge us all.

    However I have a question.

Our Hamster (Ollie) sadly died last night, we got a great three years of love & enjoyed from him, they're fun little fella's.

I've been considering getting two rats, or now even thinking of replacing Ollie with another Syrian hamster but I can't seem to find any in the shops (in Dublin).

Is anyone aware of breeders, or even rescues where I can pick up rats or another Syrian in Dublin, or even the counties surrounding Dublin.

I'm guessing if the shops are in short supply there aren't that many breeders around, is there rat & hamster rescues?.

There are no rescues for hams or rats that I've seen. Instead what I've done is adopt from the free online ad sites. You'll find lovely small pets that people have no time for anymore. I acquired my most recent Syrian this way and she was the sweetest ham I've ever had. I adopted my dwarf hamster this way too. At least this way you are not directly supporting unscrupulous breeders. TBH I don't think there are any reputable hamster or rat breeders in Ireland. Just backyard operations churning them out for the petshops. :(

ETA: My first two rats came from a local rescue. They were handed in over the counter at a local pet shop. My subsequent three rats came from a rat rescue in Dublin that isn't in operation any more. There was one great professional rattery in Cork but they've stopped too.

I seen raheny veterinary hospital have a post up today on facebook rehoming a gerbil that was handed in. Bit faster to handle than hamsters and rats but the post says he's friendly

Guys I got sorted with a beautiful albino/golden Syrian hamster up in Pet Bliss in Drogheda.

With the hair color we thought he looked like Prince Harry, and my daughter is Harry Potter mad... So, meet Harry

He's unusual in so far as he has one red eye and one brown eye
