i used to do this back in the day, lime and water only, i used to put cement thro it to change the colour, i often used a cement wash, cement plus water, this time with some some lime thro it to lighten the colour, the brush is most inportant, there was a specific brush for this, but it scattered the wash everywhere

don’t put portland cement in your limewash, it will make it vapour impermeable and nullify the very reason you put the lime plaster on in the first place. It also looks very dirty after a few years and attracts lichen growth. If you want to change colour use natural pigments.
Lime washes are good, but externally must be redone every 5 years or so, they look great, but somewhat of an acquired taste as are a bit blotchy. Alternatives would be externally, mineral paints, internally mineral, caisin, clay or natural emulsions. Traditional lime company in Carlow would be a source.

I use white Earthborn Claypaint on my lime plastered (internal) walls - easy to use, just apply it with a quality roller. It's thick and creamy, giving it high opacity with a slightly textured finish which can hide or soften any imperfections in the lime plaster finish.
