Motor tax for mobile drop-in centre truck

I am road-taxing an imported 2004 mobile library truck which has been converted to a mobile community centre / cafe. ULW: 7400 kg.

Photo of the newly wrapped truck.

I phoned the motor tax office for a price and was told €500 per year.

Q1: I just want to check: does this sound right? Is there a special purpose vehicle category that would save some money?

Q2: I can't find an engine number. Do I need that for the motor tax application? The chassis is a DAF FA LF45.180. Does anyone know where to look for the engine number if I need it?

    Is it Irish registered?

If it is, check this website under motor tax rates and enter the reg.

It will tell you the rate.

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/

I can see a reg but can’t make it out.

Don’t forget “pay 13.3% VRT on whatever OMSP Revenue pull out of the sky”

Thanks, chaps. I had looked at the Motor Tax Online site but hadn't got a PIN yet. https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/motortaxinforeg.do let's you check with just the registration number.

The basis of assessment (BOA) is the vehicle detail which facilitates the calculation of the appropriate motor tax fee, e.g. engine capacity or CO2 emissions for private cars, weight for goods vehicles. The BOA for the vehicle details entered is ENGINE CC
The rates of taxation are as follows:

    Registration: 04MO10457
    Tax Band: 3001 - 15000
    Annual: €1809
    Half Year: €1003
    Quarter Year: €511

That makes it look as though I've been quoted for 3 months only.

    Any other ideas?

I don't understand. Do I have some options here?

The owner is a registered company and is a registered charity. Can I change the registration to some other (cheaper) category?

well I'd say yes, if it's a Cafe, it's possibly Commercial and could be taxed as such rather than Private..

Yes, it may have just been taxed privately for whatever reason before.

Was it regged in Ireland before?

No. We imported it last year, I organised CVRT and registration. We've been fitting it out and sorting out insurance (€6k/year!). This is the first registration so it may have been put into the wrong category.

What do I ask for and who do I ask?

Just tax it in person. Don’t think you can do a first time taxing of a commercial at commercial rate online or something. Had this years ago with a Hilux.

Do you mean that I should go to the office to sort it out? But what am I asking for? What category / class?

I wonder if you could apply for a Youth/Community bus tax class?

Me too. I'm looking at https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/motortaxinfotype.do and the possible categories are:
    • Goods vehicle standard. €333 - €900.
    • Large PSV. €154 - €403.
    • Motor caravan. €102.
    • Youth or community bus: €154 - €403.

According to the supplementary info on the page for youth or community bus:

The BOA for the vehicle details entered is SEATING CAPACITY
The rates of taxation are as follows:
    Tax Band Annual
    0 - 20 154
    21 - 40 202
    41 - 60 403
    61 - 9999 403

This "bus" has only one passenger seat. The cafe seating is not suitable for passenger seating. What does the "Tax Band" mean?

I tried it just now with 04MO10467 and it came back as €500.

Has there been an error made in administration?

I don’t know how importing/registering a vehicle works with revenue.

The numbers under Tax Band refers to the number of (passenger) seats.

That band is the same as for a normal Bus except the first band is for 0-20 whereas normal bus is 9-20. This would suggest there is a provision for something with 0 passenger capacity to be included in the category.

I would agree with the earlier advice, you really need to go to your local office and talk to them, at least they should be able to tell you what is needed to qualify for the lower categories and you can go from there.
