    ok

chinese national with uk visa and also got a schengen one for spain

coming to ireland direct from UK as other years,

going to Spain from ireland on the schengen visa

    the big question is

can he fly back to ireland direct from Spain or does he need to go back through UK first ( makes it very costly and inconvenient)

    UK visa is multi entry

guidelines from Iries gov website seems to say he can fly back to ireland direct, but I dont want to take that risk

Travel from a third country directly to Ireland or the UK
If travelling on an eligible UK Visa, re-entry is allowed to the UK during the period of validity of the UK visa or to Ireland during the period of validity of the UK visa and current leave to enter or remain in the UK.

It is the and bit I find confusing

    thanks as always

BIVS needs to be on the Visa, the visa has to be for the first point of entry into the common travel area.

He has a UK visa so if it's stamped BIVS then he travel to Ireland but first point of Entry needs to be UK.

not sure how flying to Ireland via the UK is costly.
You can often get a flight from Spain to Stansted for a tenner, and same again from Stansted to Ireland. Obviously you need to plan in enough time, but expensive it isnt.

In this context, "leave" means permission. As long as his UK BIVS visa is a multi-entry visa and remains valid, then he can come and go freely whatever way he wants. The IATA website has it in plain English:
Passengers who first arrive in the United Kingdom (UK), including Northern Ireland with a BIVS visa issued by the United Kingdom are permitted to:
    - travel to a third country, before traveling to Ireland (Rep.) if the visa is still valid; or
    - re-enter Ireland (Rep.) from a third country if the UK visa and period of the stay granted in the UK are still valid.
Passengers with long term visas, with the endorsement "BIVS", must visit Ireland (Rep.) within a current period of stay granted in the UK.

This document (point 12c) is also clear:

Matching up the flights/times makes it costly - I have looked a multiples of getting home from Lisbon or Madrid or Barcelona via about 10 cities in UK . I imagine the school midterm breaks are having some impact ( can't avoid as co-incides with Chinese New Year) For me a cost of 130.00 to uk and 70-90 to Ireland seems expensive in any case ( I have travelled to Europe multiple tiems for much less but the dates are constraining)

This is the answer I needed - thanks . (Though may be too late)

I was quoting point12 myself, but I found it less than clear ( as a literacy tutor! ) the iata one is perfect and pre-empts the question asked

    thank you
