I wonder if there any coffee connoisseurs here who can recommend the nicest coffee in county Sligo?

It probably depends on your coffee palette really. Do you drink espresso black, lattes, cappuccino's?

I drink a lot of coffee (espresso or Americano, usually black) and I've tried most places in town.
For me personally the best 3 would be Kate's Kitchen, Le Fournil and Sweet Beat
Kate's is probably the best value too. It was €2 for a cup last time I picked one up, they do loyalty cards so you buy something like 10 and get the next one free. Le Fournil do similar and I think their coffee is €2.10. Not sure about Sweet Beat. It's been a while since I was last there.

Espresso and black Americano as I find milk neutralizes the taste. Thanks for the recommendations so far.

    2. Fabio's (ice cream place on Wine St)
    3. Kate's kitchen

Not sure if you are new to Sligo or not but if there's one thing Sligo isn't short on it's cafe's.

A lot of good ones mentioned already but it's worth checking out some of the others too to see if they serve coffee you like.
Off the top of my head, a few others would be:

    WB's Coffee House
    Lilly's and Lolly's
    Hearts Desire
Lyon's upstairs and the bakery downstairs
Shells in Strandhill, and there's the Driftwood Cart at Strandhill people's market
The little cottage in Rosses Point

And the standard franchises like Insomnia and Costa but they are probably the most expensive of the lot and the quality is average at best. Their shops do have nice spacious seating though.

    1. Osta
    2. Shells
    3. Sweet Beat (3E coffee)
    4. Cafe Fleur
    5. Knox
    6. Kates Kitchen

Wouldn't bother with anywhere else in town, have tried and tested them all :p

Kate's changed their coffee machine to a far larger one around the time of the Fleadh IIRC..

.. and I don't think their coffee has been as nice since.

Could be out of your way but the Nook in Collooney has nice coffee (fab food too).

Did you ever try that place at the roundabout in Collooney? (Not the petrol station)

If you mean Gourmet Parlour yes I have. It's handy especially for parking although it can be packed at lunchtime. Tasty food, coffee okay also & reasonably priced. Open from 12 Sundays

I was in town the other day near 6pm its a pity most places close so early if you want to meet friends for a chat but not go to a pub. I went to the Blind Tiger. The coffee was nice just not gone on the place as a coffee shop.

Is there are coffee shops in Rosses Point that anyone here would recommend? Also if I could get some recommendations for place in North Sligo?

The Little Cottage in Rosses Point is nice, as is The Driftwood. The cafe in the yacht club has changed management recently but I haven't been yet.

The Gallery Cafe is in the Yacht club now. They used to be in the Model Sligo, and briefly on Grattan street last year.
Most coffee shops in general would be closed @ 6pm or earlier. The business just wouldn't be there after that time.

I think Insomnia stay open later on a Thursday / Friday evening.

Lyons's filter coffee. Actually they are the only cafe serving filter coffee.

Ironically a lot of the best coffees in America are filter. Not harsh auld Americanos.

Was up in Finland and Sweden recently, they too had the filter coffee available. One thing I noticed too, was the peace and quiet in the coffee shops there. No constant coffee grinding etc. racket.

For store take away coffee the Essence coffee station in Supervalu Grange is hard to beat. Nice coffee, choice of strong or regular and free syrup shots..Vanilla etc.
    (No commercial interest...just an addict!)

Sweet Beat is ace, although there is one particular barista who isnt!
Grandmas Coffee Shop in Five Star Fun is good stuff.
    Also +1 for Kates.

I'm not sure if Cafe Fleur serve filter in their shop. I've only had their coffee out of the canisters they use for events, functions but it's filter brewed for those and lovely.

There's a new restaurant in Strandhill open called Stoked that are serving French Press coffee (local Carrow Coffee roastery beans)

Derry did an experiment last year where cafes and coffee shops stayed open into the evening. I think it was only meant to be for a few weeks or a month but was such a success that they carried it on. I don't know if its still the case, but I have friends that live there that said the place was buzzing each evening, with people enjoying being able to go out for a drink that wasn't alcohol. Maybe it'll happen again this summer. Would be great to see other towns and cities adopt it. If the business is there, maybe they will.

That sounds a great idea but Sligo is so backward when it comes to going forward.then again will the Co Co and chamber support and lead on such inatives not a chance.

Well, your own attitude is not very positive, is it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭red sean

In fairness, the CoCo and Chamber can't force them. If they want to take up the initiative themselves I'm sure no one will stop them.
Would be interesting to see if it made any difference to a town, with little reason for large footfall after 6pm, compared to a city like Derry.

  • Registered Users Posts: 631 ✭✭✭sligono1

Well sean you have completely taken me up wrong or I dunno what you read or your just back the powers that be.
There is little or no support from our local government toward local business Sligo is slipping and that's what I mean the other poster who's having a go I for one support local I have family members involved in local business and i hear their pain.and one huge stumbling block you hear them say is local government sadly I can't see that change any time soon.

I stopped in Tubbercurry today. There is a tiny coffee shop at the square I can't remember the name but it's a small town so not hard to find. The coffee was excellent, pity the cafe is so small

i cant fault insomnia .. but then again i am not a coffee connoisseur. my experiences of coffee stretch from nescafe gold instant coffee with milk to cappuccino with extra milk or latte ... and thats about it really - saying that , to save money at home on the nescafe gold (cause it quite pricey for large jar) - we now on large jar of ALDI Alcafé classic Rich Roast this last while and to me it tastes exactly like Nescafe Gold Blend instant at a fraction of the price.

Anyone know if any of the cafe's in Sligo just serve up bog standard instant coffee granule type instant coffee just for us mere mortals who just want an ordinary non-fancy bloody cheap cup of coffee! ?

Just ask for a cup of hot water and bring your own granules in your pocket :D:D

Seriously though, there’s quite a few people that would drink instant but dislike barista coffees I would say. Two completely different drinks in my opinion too. Not saying that as a coffee snob. I drink both, but genuinely I think they taste nothing alike!

Would you pay €2 plus for an instant coffee? I wouldn’t, but to be fair to the coffee shop, they’d probably need to be charging that. Not for the coffee granules, but for everything else they have to cover. Look at the price of a cup of tea.

I'd pay 1.20 for a cup of tea (tea bag of needed) and 1.50 (instant coffee) coffee and some chocolate digestives or large choc chip cookie. That would be enough in the refreshment stakes for me. No fancy gaff, no arty farty, just a table to sit down at and that's it. People seem to forget, if you are going to put a cafe in a popular street with high rents and rates and put on expensive furnishings and have a plethora of staff you have to put all those overheads on your beverages and eats , then that raises up the price for the customer , so it's them who pay (get ripped off) for all those overheads when all théy might want (after spending money on parking and shopping) is just a cheap cup of tea or coffee and nothing no more fancy than that

Heading up to Sligo this weekend (from Cork) and usually look here to see if there's anything going on.

Anyways, last time we were up we went to The Vintage Lane cafe as there was a small fair on. The cafe there was lovely and the coffee was very nice.
