Aer Lingus Viscount crash 1967

Not to hijack the thread but EI-AOF was the first of two Aer Lingus Viscounts lost in 1967.

The second accident (non-fatal, I believe) happened at Bristol Airport on Sept 22nd, 1967 when the aircraft St. Aiden (EI-AKK) crash-landed during a landing attempt during bad weather. It was damaged beyond economical repair.

The Irish Times report on a ceremony today to commemorate the deaths of three Aer Lingus pilots in a training accident near Ashbourne in 1967. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/ceremony-for-men-killed-in-aer-lingus-training-flight-crash-1.3354850

The report is in error however when it says that this was the first ever fatal accident for the airline, as DC-3 EI-AFL had crashed in Snowdonia in 1952 with the loss of 23 lives.

    Really poor reporting IMO.

I would agree but I wonder what sources the writer used, perhaps they took their info from the people behind the commemoration? Understandably they could be a little focused on the 1967 training flight crash and thus unaware of the previous loss of life.

Very likely the journalist repeated what he had been given. A bit of fact-checking would have been in order though, especially on such a basic piece of information.

Its so easy to get all "hot 'n bothered" on a forum like this. Why not do something constructive and contact the Editor of the Irish Times or the journo directly and alert them to the actual facts.

The article has been amended and a note at the bottom stating the correction.

No real interest in the subject matter. Just a tad weary of reading the usual "bad reporting comments" ad infinitum.

It’s the issue with any niche subject being written about by a non familiar journalist. I don’t thnk anyone was get too upset over it in this instance though.
