Primary School Teaching Job

My wife is starting a course here in Canada to get her primary school teaching degree (elementary over here) with the aim to returning to Ireland after she has completed it. I have a few questions:

    1. Will there be any hurdles she has to jump when she returns? We’ve researched the Irish requirement issue and she has a few years when she returns to get that sorted but anything else?

    2. What is the best route to get a teaching job? I realize primary school teaching is a competitive area but any tips etc would be helpful.

    3. On that note, what is the job market like going into 2018 for primary school teachers?

    Regards

I'd recommend contacting The Teaching Council who could advise her of what she will have to do to address any shortcomings that there may be. Irish and religion are the obvious ones. All newly qualified teachers have to complete an induction/probation period so she will need a minimum of 60 or 100 consecutive days work to do this, depending on the type of induction procedures in place in the school - either through a new model called Droichead or the traditional model with Dept. Of Education Inspectorate.

In terms of employment opportunities, educationposts.ie is where most vacancies are advertised. There is a serious shortage of substitute teachers this year and I can only presume it'll get worse next year. If she can get her foot in the door of a few schools subbing then hopefully it won't be long before a temporary contract comes up. Once she gets a temporary contract she can satisfy the probation/induction issue.

There are all sorts of complicated rules regarding permanent posts/panels etc that I don't even fully understand myself so it would be worth contacting the INTO which is the union for primary teachers, who can explain all of that.

There's a shortage at present as no new grads came on stream last year and many teachers went abroad as they couldn't get full hours, much less full time posts.
