Solving a cooling issue

intermittent temp rise on a 1.6 petrol Toyota 4afe - Story so far is i have replaced the rad and flushed the coolant. i had thought this did the trick for a while, but then temp rise happened again.

Rad not getting hot, input hose is, outlet hose is not.

Thermostat is not too old, couple of years id say - it ran fine after installation for this time period.

Water pump had been replaced but this is many years ago - i have no more info on that.

So today i ran the car till temp up to normal - disconnected the hose into the rad and restarted the engine, thermostat should have been open by now - but no coolant was being pumped.

So I am thinking either the pump is gone or the thermostat is gone.

Thermostat would be an easier fix - so i was thinking of removing the thermostat and running it - this would rule out if it is gone or stuck - and if the water still didnt circulate I could safely say its the water pump

What say you to all that?

Sounds like a plan. Probably cheapest / easiest way of diagnosing it.
Only other thing I can think... have you any reason to think a serious blockage exists ?
You've already flushed it so *should* be clear.

That was the reason i changed the rad a few months back, though it wasnt at full capacity _ but flushed it first then new rad fitted and fresh coolant obviously and was om for a while- thats why i suspect the pump more so - also the previous owner was using water unstead of coolant for a large part of the cars 22 years so who knows what shape the impelers are on it- i actually have a pump there _ its just a much bigger job- will remove thermo and report back

thermostat out, engine on, hose to rad disconnected and nothing coming out of it - so no circulation means dead pump i suppose
