Leak, mixed usage, no notification, big fat bill

I contacted IW in Sep 2017 to inquire why I was listed as a business customer when I am a single dwelling house on 12 acres. I received confirmation of my email but no reply.

I don’t run a farm or any business at my home. I don’t use any water for farming or anything other than normal domestic use.

I have always paid the county council a small fee for water since buying my house in 2005 since it’s considered agricultural land. Basically, fields around the house. The cost was nominal.

I paid my last bill as usual last quarter....then this morning I got the new bill for €4500! I called IW, was told I have a leak and to hire a plumber to fix it and report back?

Why wasn’t I notified of water usage that is so obviously irregular? I cannot afford to pay this bill and I’m scared that it is going up by the minute. I have a plumber calling out tomorrow. Why aren’t mixed customers covered by the first fix and am going to get stuck with this huge bill? I don’t think it’s fair.

Not at all..sure they can't stand over that..
Do they have a meter on your property? How can they say how much you have consumed..do you mind me asking what part of the country are you? I work in the water services 🖒

My memory is, that Kerry CC had a meter standing charge on farms and read and billed them twice a year.

Can you turn your stop cock off in house and eliminate if leak is between house and meter..might give you a quick fix.
