Rewiring! What does it really mean?

So it's time to rewire our house. We want to get some quotes but we are still not sure what the process really entails. We don't need to add improvements or extra sockets, just replace what we have. Are they going to rip the wiring from the walls? What about where it's behind tiled walls? How much of a mess to expect?

You say its time to rewire, where you advised to?

I presume its an old house as you say you don't need improvements. Is it an insurance request?

It involves exactly what you say, rewiring.

Old cables removed , replaced with conforming regulated wiring. If its being done a new fusebox will more than likely be installed with current safety specs and certs.

Update your sockets , many now have USB.

    It will be messy.

Thank you. There is no insurance request but the house is 40yo and we feel it's time ourselves, the wiring in the attic looks very messy. We want to do some renovations next so lining things up in proper order... The fusebox will definitely be replaced. I just don't know how much wall work to expect.

what kind of house is it. bungalow , 2 storey etc.
you say its messy. does that mean that you have wires on the surface . if you do then these will be chased into the wall.

any sockets or switch's heights will be changed to meet regs.

very messy job but well worth it

It's a bungalow. Messy as in wires everywhere on the attic floor. Old fusebox, sockets and switches.

is there plastic piping feeding the sockets . this conduit will make it easier and less messy.

messy wires in the attic is easy sort during the rewire. tell the electrition to run them properly

As above if a conduit is in place it will be easier. If chasing walls obviously a new coat of paint, wallpaper and tiles will be on the list.

Regarding quotes to give you an idea about 10 years ago my uncle rewired a 4 bed semi d in rathfarnham built circa 1965 for a cost 4000 euro thereabouts.

Just to add I think it may be mandatory now but you said you weren't changing anything but get some wired smoke alarms installed.

You won’t get new cables down old conduit. It’ll just make the chasing a small bit easier if you take the same route.

OP, use this as a reason to make life more convenient. Two way switches beside the bed, 5a sockets for lamps etc.

also think about adding in data points etc (or conduit to suite) for any future needs.

I was in a sparks house over Christmas. he has a row of fused switched spurs in the hall closet that allow him to turn on and off sockets in each room that he uses for the x mass tree and lights in the window. also controls Christmas stuff plugged in out in the yard and the lights on the house . .

I thought it was handy to turn them all on and off from one place and not have to roll around trying to reach the plug for the tree

Add data point at every tv location for future direct hard wired connection to the internet router. Mush better speeds than WiFi and a more secure connection.

that ability to turn on an outside flood light from the bedroom would be nice incase you heard a noise and thought someone was out there

We don't watch tv, but it's a good point to consider!

Have it already. It really is handy.
