    What car & engine??
All engines will burn some oil, to be honest 1L in 5k miles is quite good.

Most manufacturers specify a litre of oil every 1000 miles as being ok (crazy). Do you know if it's leaking oil or burning it off?

I had a Golf like this some years ago . had to trade it in . Don't use any oil other than recomended or you will have emission problems at the NCT.

You won't unless it is something like a mk4 petrol golf which had emission problems anyway even with the correct oil

That doesn't sound excessive. Its fairly normal in the likes of a diesel vag engine. How old is the car and what mileage is on it? I change the oil roughly every 6000 km, so it's easy enough to monitor oil usage. Some people will say that's over cautious, but it cannot be stressed enough how vital oil is to the life of an engine, well worth €30 or €40 a couple of times a year.
Slick 50 is still available, but it won't reduce oil consumption, and may even block smaller oil ways.

it's higher than normal but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. If it's a new car I'd be a bit more put out.
Well unless a TFSI or an Alfa which like a bit of petrol with their oil.

Do not use and do not believe any oil additive that you hope it would reduce your oil consuming. They wont do anything except clean your money. I heard that use a thicker oil might be a good option. An other option is to change your piston rings, head gasket and valve steam seals. You could DIY if you could get a repair manual for your car. I got one from ebay for my Toyota and worked perfectly.:P

1L per 5000 miles, you're doing fine. Nothing to worry about, that's what my car uses and I am very happy with that.

This taken from a BMW service manual circa 2013:

"For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000
km. Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil
    consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km."

I personally dont understand why some car manufacturers like Toyota or BMW could suggest these too high oil consumptions. 1L/1000 Km and 1.5L/1000Km are too much. If 1L/1000KM, your engine was worn out and could see lot smoke at the exhaust pipe. This would kill your CAT, Lamda Sensors... etc.

I guess it's at the extreme end of what will pass the legislators etc. to stop people looking for warranty work.

Get a couple of bottles of dipetane
    2 one litre bottles
Let your fuel tank go down to a quarter and stick a third of a bottle in each time for a few weeks and drive the stones out of the engine, high rpm driving
Before your nct give your engine a good run,Send it in really hot
Will need to be repeated a few times
You have to drive a diesel hard, they dont like been babied

Also my egr is blocked,I am not sure if that can be done to your fiat
