Bank Holidays Query

Is there a official view/stance about Bank Holidays and working hours or what is the story? Can each Employer just decide themselves what they want to do for their Staff or how does it play out? Like, what I mean is, Bank Hol. on a Mon. and you're supposed to be working Mon. Or like Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day were two Weekdays. So is there an official line held on this or do Employers do their own thing as they see fit? Like I know generally, where Company by Company would decide on Closure occurring for eg. Dec. 27th onwards, those few days would be taken out of your Holidays, but am just wondering about actual Bank Holidays that are on a working Weekday. T.i.a.

Should be answered in the terms of your own individual contract with your employer

Pretty comprehensive answers below from Citizens Information on basic public/bank holiday entitlements

Sorry! Tried to explain as best I could! I guess the question is, when a Bank Holiday occurs on a Weekday that I'm supposed to be working, - what is the statutory or legal requirement? Where the Place-of-Business closes, and I get paid for it, - do I essentially still owe them a day's work at that point? Or because of it being a Weekday, is there an obligation on the Employer to give a day to the Staff for it?
