Hia, am thinking of traveling to St Petersburg for couple days. I know if I get a cruise to St Petersburg visa free, getting cruise is expensive enough but can I travel to a place where I can join the cruise to dock in St Petersburg or would I need to do full cruise in order to stop at my desire location? Any tips and advice will be appreciated

The other issue with a cruise is that you can only do guided tours.

You can't just walk off and see the city yourself.

Just get the visa and do it on your own, trust me it's well worth it. Stunning city that needs time more than anything. The Hermitage is a solid day in it's self and even at that you're only scratching the surface. Couldn't imagine being hearded around like sheep by a tour guide there.

+1 did a 7 day Baltic Sea cruise last year which included St. Petersburg. The ship stopped at a cruise terminal beside which was an immigration office which you had to pass through to get to the coach for your excursion. It was a simple formality and they stamped your passport but that terminal was a long way from the city and I didn't see any taxis waiting for us.

I did spot one foreign cruise ship docked in the city. It was a mid-sized ship, I think one of the all-inclusive (i.e. very expensive) lines. Not sure if the passengers on that boat were able to walk off and do their own thing. I think money talks even more in Russia than a lot of other countries so it wouldn't surprise me if the passengers were encouraged to slip a few dollars to the 'official' at the end of the gangplank as they disembarked.

I took St. Peter line visa free option from Helsinki a few years ago. We certainly were able to do our own thing when there. Stayed in a nice hotel for two nights. Was affordable too.
