I got my first provisional 24/6/11 and renewed it 20/2/16.
    It says it expires 19/2/18

I can’t seem to get anyone from NDLS on the phone to confirm info.

I’m just wondering if I have to resit the theory test or can I get a third?
I just haven’t gotten around to doing the lessons (super nervous!)

    Your third learner permit

You may not apply for a third or subsequent learner permit unless you can provide:

Evidence that you have undergone a driving test in the 2-year period prior to the application (a 2-year learner permit will be granted) or
Evidence of a forthcoming test date (a 1-year learner permit will be granted)

Ah ok, so if I apple for a test even if the test isn’t until next January, I can get an extension. Maybe that will encourage me to do the lessons and pass my test within a year!

I know that not every permit holder is motivated to get on the road and shur that's life but really, the NDLS or RSA are not going to pressure you to take your test until you're ready.

Just to give you the full picture...

You don't even need an actual test date to renew your permit - the first thing the RSA will do is accept your "test booking" which is basically an acknowledgement that you applied for a test but won't be able to issue you a date until you pass your EDT lessons.

You're in a limbo between making the "booking" and being eligible to receive a test date. Once your instructor contacts the RSA to declare your lessons as complete, this triggers the RSA to issue you a test date.

You will have to make this "test booking" and can immediately receive a 1 year permit now and as long as you remain in this limbo (ie you don't complete EDT), you will be able to stay in this limbo forever. You can come back once a year to renew your permit. If you choose not to renew your permit (ie you just have no reason to get on the road) as long as you don't allow your last permit to EXPIRE for 5 or more years, you'll be free to come back to the NDLS and pick up where you left off without having to repeat the theory test as long as you do so within 5 years. Your "test booking" will also remain in place for this time.

I know of someone who has an L plate for 8 years, which would give credence to you post. It is incredible that a person can drive on an L plate without ever passing a driving test.

Well, as long as they do so within the bounds of the law, then it's grand. If they're driving alone (my guess is they are) then they're bound to run out of luck eventually. I do kind of scoff when I hear people complaining about how arduous the process is when you can see that we're about as relaxed as you can get.
