Hi, we have a concrete stairs and want to carpet it. Do we have to put wood on the step first? The carpet supplier was saying this in order to prolong the life of the carpet. We went with concrete for fire proof and no noise. Is it possible to put just underlay and carpet directly onto the stairs? Has anyone else done this? Does it last?

You do not need to put wood on the stairs ..a good underlay us need ie.hairfelt .and the gripperods can either be stuck with adhesive or drilled and plugged .done plenty of them 35 years fitting carpets

    Have the same query myself?
    How you get on OP?
Carpet lad says that concrete edges are sharp and wear carpet quicker and can either put timber on or smooth edges of concrete stairs. Just seems over the top.
Thinking would underlay not be enough along with carpet

Its not over the top. We just replaced a wool carpet that was down just over a year, the edge of the step is like a blade and will cause premature wear on the carpets, underlay will not stop that.

    That’s good to know thanks.
What do most people do that have a concrete stairs?

You need to plyboard out the base part of the step, and bullnose it to remove the sharp edge. It's not a big job, more of a headache.
