My husband is a sole trader and has a friend who he is going to give a few hours work to here and there (plumber).
This other person is self employed so will be paying his own taxes etc.
Is there anything my husband needs to declare to revenue or do before he can start paying a sub contractor?

I take it your husband is working is construction or something related.

Big red flags here Relevant Contracts Tax may apply.

    Yes, he is a plumber.

Does he have to hold back the RCT and pay it on the subcontractor behalf? There is no way of avoiding this process?

And if not, is it a lot of work to set up?

He has to register the payment with revenue and revenue will instruct whether to make a deduction (which is to be paid over to revenue) or not.

I don't consider it much work to set it up but I'm a computer literate person with experience in the field and have used revenues online service every day of my life for quiet a few years.

Being a bit more specific (or pedantic!) he has to register the contract first.

Then, before he makes a payment, he has to register the payment, at which point revenue will instruct whether to make a deduction under RCT (as mentioned by the above poster).

Once you register contracts and payments a few times, it becomes second nature...
