DS game issue

    Old skool I know but I bought a second hand DS game 'Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story'. Trouble us that the first pipe I come across which you have to go down won't respond. The down button definitely works on the DS and on different scenearios in the game but not with this pipe. I've checked walk-throughs and I've done everything right up to this point (very early in the game). Is it possible for a game to have a glitch like this. The weird thing is the save games that were already on the cartridge were after this point. You have to go down this pipe to progress.

    It's uncommon, are you sure you are doing everything?
    Can you test the game on another system perhaps?
    There are dodgy clones out there, copies of games, but that's more a Gameboy Advance thing.
    It seems more likely it's the system at fault, and the only way to rule that out is with a test, as said before.

    I know you've already done so, but watching a slow and steady walkthrough video may help, and follow it as you go, there may be a task or button unpressed that you need to do.

    Yeah, I was hoping to find another system to test it on but difficult enough to source one handy to me.
    I'm definitely doing everything correctly in the game up to this point. I've read and watched various walkthroughs.
    I only came across one person online who had the same issue but they never said if they solved it.

    Funnily enough I think the L shoulder button isn't working either. At least you have the press that to cancel the type of attack you use but that could be because at this early stage I only have one choice of attack active so the cancel function may not apply. I'll do some more testing when I get home this evening.

    Conformed that both shoulder button work (in Mario Kart). Gonna have to source a spare system somewhere.

    Both brothers need to be on the pipe and not all pipes work. Press down apparently.

    It's at the stage before you rescue Luigi so just Mario by himself. I got a chance to check it on a 2ds and it worked fine! Stupidly I don't use the opportunity to save at a later stage. Still weird that it doesn't work on my DS when I know it's not a hardware issue.
