no tips and no roster

I work full time and my days change every week. However, the roster is not done until Sunday evening sometimes as late as 10pm. I cannot plan for any day any week. I have asked that we get more no notice but I am ignored. I have tried to book time off but the boss calls me and chews me for letting them down. Our tips were always pooled. The owner decided to put them in a money box and that he would divide them. I cannot afford to leave and I am afraid if I do that I will get a bad reference. They have wrongly given potential employers unfair reflections of ex staff members. Where do we stand? I am made feel like they are doing me a favour by employing me. I have never been late for work, stay late and oblige them when they are stuck

I'm assuming this is a hospitality job, like a restaurant or bar. To be honest, that's not the kind of job you need a good reference from. You are worth more to them than they are to you. Where the the tips going?

Get a new job. Explain to the employer you are current working but your boss doesn't know you are looking. They'll understand.

"stay late and oblige them when they are stuck"

    That's your problem right there.

yes restaurant and bar. I see what everyone else puts in the box and theres no way that what each of us get is the full amount. A good reference will go a long way towards securing another job. My supervisor is always thanking me for a job well done but hes not allowed provide any staff with a reference. I'm stuck for the moment

I was in the same position as you for nearly 8 years. Took a chance last year and haven't looked back since.

Emily make the move whilst you're still working now.

    You won't regret it.

Get another job. Don't care about the reference, as the guy sounds like he'll give you a bad reference regardless. If possible, start the new job the day after you get paid in the current job.
