    Hello all.

A few of you may be in the know here.
So I bought myself a car up north in August 2016. Imported it to the republic and had it just over a year. Happy days.
Got offered a job in the UK so I brought the car over with me. Got it registered here in UK, MOT'd etc.
Spotted online that I could claim a refund on the VRT I paid when I brought the car from North into the republic
One problem, to get the refund I have to have the car NCT export tested prior to leaving the country. I didn't know this.
I got on to revenue and basically I'd have to get the car registered in Ireland again, do the NCT export exam and then reimport it to the UK.

    Well tits.

Looking at a car in the UK,

My own car is a Lexus RX400h in good condition with relatively low mileage and a full Lexus service history.

When I look at the VRT calculator the VRT on the car would be about 2,100.

If I was to export the car I would get a VRT refund of 1,600.

The car would also be more valuable in the UK, I am seeing similar examples for

    13900 GBP.

    https://usedcars.lexus.co.uk/en/used-lexus/Lexus/RX-400h/33-SE-L-kmbk9wh

In Ireland the car would be going for about 7,000 euro.

    https://www.cbg.ie/lexus/rx/2007-petrol-silver-suv-automatic-3.3-dublin

This tallies with the VRT valuation of 6,500.

So has anyone done annything like this.

I reckon that I would get a VAT refund of 1,600 and perhaps get 5,000 on a trade in.

    Anyone try anything like this.

    Was there any complications.

I think the speedo needs to be in or also in mph to register in the UK, not too clear from this though if a right hand drive import needs certificate of Mutual Recognition...
Attach receipts to prove you’ve made any required alterations, eg fitting a speedometer to display miles per hour.

Also as the vehicle is over 10 years old, it does not need vehicle approval.

Looks like I dont need the certificate of mutual recognition either.

    Anyone any experience of this.

If the vehicle’s registered in the EU
Get a European Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer to show you have approval for an EU-registered vehicle.

You also have to get a certificate of Mutual Recognition if it’s a left hand drive vehicle.

This will change the speedo if I had to

It is still registered in Ireland.

Just catching up on this. Told my NCT is still valid, I wouldn't need to visit the VRT crowd. I simply drive home, pay the tax and pop on the number plates. Makes life easier.
If I do the cert for export I'd need a log book. I surrendered my Irish one when I moved to the UK. I presume tell DVLA I've left UK, and apply for new log book in Ireland. Not 100% sure though.
    Well tits
