Transfer ownership of car?

Just wondering if this is possible. Looking at a new car, the garage is offering a deal to me, so I can trade in my own car but also I can use a trade in program. So find an old banger and they will give me a couple of K off the car.

I don’t have anything myself but my brother has an old van which they will accept. The issue is the car will need to be put into his name as the van is in his name.

I am just wondering, if I do this, can I just transfer ownership of the car back to myself? Or will I cause a huge issue with revenue as they might see as a gift?

I have no idea, will I have issues?

Buy a sh1tbox for €100 get it delivered on a trailer job done.

Plenty of tow companies if driving it is a issue.

Some of these scrappage schemes insist on you being the registered owner of the car for a certain length of time to stop fellas buying scrap heaps just to avail of a scrappage discount.

The OP can do it the way he asked ie. Get the new car registered to his brother who has an old van to use as scrappage. When your brother receives the log book then put your details in the change of ownership section and send it off to Shannon. OP will then receive a new logbook with his name on it, pretty much the same as if you just bought the car from your brother. Yes it adds an extra owner to the car but the discount will more than cover the small loss from that if any in a few years time. The scrappage scheme is another term for discount by the car manufacturers rather than a Government scrappage scheme so there is nothing illegal about doing this or any concern from Revenue. Remember they receive a chunk of VRT from the purchase price of the new car.

One thing to note though is that your brother will not receive the first logbook until the car is taxed.

Thanks bazz26, just what I wanted to know

They want the car in owners name for 6 months as you mention, otherwise I would just buy it off him and then trade it in
