Shorter Breaks

    Hi,
    Sorry if this has been asked before. HR is out of the office this week and my manager is stalling.
    My question is can I legally take shorter breaks to finish my day earlier? My shift is 9-5.30 with 1 hour 15 minutes worth of breaks. Can I not take 30 minutes of break and leave 30 minutes early?
    Just back in work off maternity leave and looking for options to make the day away from baba a bit shorter.

    Are you asking if you have a legal right to shorten your breaks to finish early? No is the answer. Your employer is required to give you a break, but there is no legal requirement for them to shorten your working day.

    Legally you have to take at least 30 mins break with your hours. Are the tea breaks paid? If they are, you can only shorten your lunch break.
    As a working parent myself I’d advise you to keep a long lunchbreak- it can be a good chance to get a walk done or a bit of shopping without kids! I shortened my break last year due to study commitments and I missed my lunchtime exercise sessions.

    And so he should. It's an issue for HR.

    You may be legally required to take 15 min breaks.

    As for lunch time, which is usually unpaid. similar to your start and end times they're stated in your contract. Your lunch break may be long but it's not excessive.
