Is it normal to have a second molar extracted but wisdom tooth kept in? I have decay of second molar caused by position of wisdom tooth. At the time the dentist said wisdom tooth would have to be removed but now he is saying the second molar should be removed and wait a couple of weeks to see about wisdom tooth

Might be normal, might not. You'd really need to have a clinical& radiographic examination to assess the situation properly.
It doesn't sound absolutely bizarre or unheard of, if that's what you're asking.
Seek a 2nd opinion(in real life, not online) if you're unsure or concerned, & or ask your own dentist further questions if things have not been explained sufficiently.
