What are the best options for good spacious petrol family car?

Does not seem to be a lot of choice in petrol in engine sizes 1.3 or above. It's all diesel.

Are these 1 litre turbo engines really worth considering?

Why don't you go to the dealer and check yourself?
What might be perfectly acceptable for one, will be utter rubbish for someone else (exp. 1.2 TSI 85 PS)...

Always good to hear what has worked well for others as a starting point.

    Any recommendations much appreciated

In that case Octavia 1.0 tsi will be perfect.

Been looking at this myself (upgrading a Toyota Avensis to a circa 151 reg) and been very reliably advised (by an actual Toyota dealer) to dump Toyota as they are gone to hell and look at Mazda6.

The problem is you probably won't get petrol Mazda6's in the republic. but you'd get them up North.

Surely a lot depends on the size of your family?

I am in the same boat myself, have always driven a petrol toyota, have two babies and looking for a new family car. Currently looking at hyundai i30 tourer as i have a car that qualifies for scrappage deal. Without the scrappage i would probably end up with a second hand toyota avensis estate or maybe a verso. I have driven the 1.0 litre turbo hyundai i30 edition and liked it but still have a few doubts to erase. Going to test drive it again tomorrow.
Next to impossible to find a second hand petrol toyota and nearly all the popular family cars are diesel. I just have concerns about the 1.0 litre engines being able for a bit of a load. A 1.4 litre engine is available in England for the hyundai but not here.

Stop thinking about capacity. The 1.0 can deliver power of 140 PS - as much as BMW 318i (1995 ccm!) fifteen years ago...

How did that conversation come about?
Are you sure he was the dealer and not a disgruntled employee?

Yes I am sure. It was a three-way conversation between me, a Dublin Toyota dealer and my father-in-law (who is a former Toyota dealer and very good friends with said Toyota dealer). I told him I wanted to upgrade my own 2012 Toyota Avensis to a 2015 Toyota Avensis and he told us in no uncertain terms that Toyota have gone downhill fast and going further downhill by the day and if looking for a car in a similar range, Mazda6 is the best way to go.

Definitely the Avensis. A good Avensis can go on for absolute years if well looked after, and that could be an 08 Avensis.

Amazing stuff and as you say from the horse's mouth.
I have had my doubts about what they have done with the Avensis for some time but you don't expect to hear it from two Toyota insiders.

/\ this. The captur comes in a 0.9 litre engine. Works fine. Power is the driver. Test drive and take a look. These engines tend to be the cheapest in the range as they are small and easy to make plus light so good for economy. Bit more money for trim upgrades and accessories. Check out the Octavia.
