Hi, new to EVs here! Have posted on the fb page but have been advised to check here as well in case any further advice. We are looking to buy a small car mainly to be used for a daily commute of circa 20k each way. We have test driven a 2015 Zoe, quoted €13k and also a 2012 Leaf, €10k. Both low mileage and battery owned, (we don't want to lease), both with a range of about 100k (according to the dealers!). Have been researching online but even more confused than before! Would one of these cars be a good choice or should we continue searching? Also any thoughts on which charger to get installed at home? Any advice/comments appreciated, thank you!

Is depreciation heavier on EVs in contrast to the fossil fuel type of car? I was just looking on carzone and a 142 is for sale for €12,900. New 181s are on sale from €26k t €35k. It seems a fairly large drop in value for a fairly new car.
    Genuine question by the way.

    Hi.

I’ve replied to you on FB as well, did you get a chance to read the blog post I wrote about how I chose my LEAF?

There are a couple of main considerations, really. They boil down to the size of car you need and the budget you have for it. Zoe and LEAF are broadly similar in terms of 2nd hand value, but the LEAF is a bigger car. There are pros and cons to each, but I’d say a decent starting place would be to sit into each, and take them for a spin. You’ll probably have a preference after that, and then you can think about the various options that your chosen one can come with. Both have a variety of battery sizes and charging rates to choose from.

    Genuine question by the way.

About half the original price after almost 4 years? I’d say that’s about normal.

Plus, when you factor in the fuel savings, the depreciation is easier to justify if you’re buying new. Of course, what you’ve identified there is how good a value thy are to the 2nd hand buyer!

Lots of different variables play into fuel economy, but comparing my old car (1.6 petrol Honda Civic) to my current car (LEAF), I’m saving in the region of €650 for every 10,000km. The savings will go up as the price of petrol goes up.

VRT is zero on an EV, so importing might be a sensible way to buy-in.

Motor tax is cheap (€120 per year).

So, all told, depreciation is about the same as any car, but you have the benefit of offsetting that against much reduced day to day costs compared to a petrol/diesel car.
