If SSD is much quieter than HDD, will combo of SSD+HDD be loud/quiet?

(Not talking about a hybrid rive here, although be curious to hear back on that too.)

    I'm comparing 256gb SSD against a combination of 128gb SSD + 1tb HDD....
Would the combo be same level of noise as a HDD on its own, or any quieter?

if the hdd spins down while not in use then it would be silent while you're only accessing the ssd.. if you are that concerned about sound that 1 hdd will be too loud then go all ssd and have hdd elsewhere like another room connected over the network or just connect to it when you need to back up / free up space on the laptop

The levels of noise from a laptop HDD are very low anyway, I wouldn't have thought it was even audible. This might depend on the machine however, but it's not something I would be concerned about.

As for which to choose outside of noise it all depends on what you need. Is 256GB enough storage for you? Or do you see yourself needing an external hard drive as storage in conjunction? If so I'd consider the 128+1tb.

Thanks for the swift replies guys. Much appreciated

I'm basically just picking from what's available on Dell Outlet site, which is fine there's a decent selection. And for me, it seems to be boiling down to those two options at roughly the same price.

My current laptop bought in 2010 says that I have 330gb of 455gb still free.....
Would this suggest that I'm probably the kind of user who doesn't need any more than 256gb storage anyway?

I'm not actually super fussed about noise, but just like the idea of it being near silent instead of constant background hum , IF that's the case with SSD I mean. Most stuff I've read seems to say that the combo is better for most people

In your use case I'd go for 256gb. Seems like plenty of space for you, totally silent, and the biggest thing is that you don't have to worry about doing damage to a spinning disk by carrying the laptop around while it's turned on

Yes I would agree. 256GB is definitely more than manageable for most! And it'll be lightning fast with the SSD.
