Installing an Aerial inside an Attic

I have a coax cable junction box in my attic and there are 2 coax cables going from the box into my sitting room. Both of these cables are currently being used by the satellite dish. I would like to install a tv aerial in my attic and use a Combiner to bring the tv signal into the sitting room via one of the 2 satellite coax’s.

I have never installed an aerial before. Is there a particular type that I will need to buy so that it will work inside an attic? I am only trying to receive the Irish terrestrial channels. Is there a way that I can test that I would be able to receive strong enough signals inside the attic before purchasing an aerial, only to find out that it doesn’t work indoors?

A one for all amplified aerial will usually do and you don't need to put it in the attic it will work indoors near a window preferably.

    about 40 euro from Tesco.

You would need some kind of aerial to test the signal. There's no particular kind for attics, but I'd be inclined to try something with moderate gain at least.

I certainly wouldn't be spending 40 quid on a set-top aerial anyway. There's no guarantee you'll get any kind of reception with one of those, despite the claim in post #2.

Have you looked at the Saorview coverage checker, to get an idea of the best transmitter to aim for, & how close you are to it?

Do you have any recommendations on a brand/model I should use, how much I would need to spend, and where I should buy one?

I clicked on the link that you included. I am 36km north of Kippure. How do I use this information to decide what type of aerial that I need?

This Group T aerial for Kippure, test it in the attic, if the signal isn't adequate it can be mounted outside.

I have one mounted in my attic, 23 km from kippure, pointed the aerial at 143 degrees south east(From the saorview website). I used a compass on my phone to get the correct direction and mounted it to a joist, i figured out the direction first and then mounted it accordingly.(Back left hand corner of my attic.)
Buy a suitable mount for the aerial, I tried to make one but couldn't get a decent fixing:pac:
It all works fine, on two seperate boxes(cheap box and Formuler F1)
I bought the above aerial too.

You'll probably be alright with the 'contract' aerial linked to above. Something like this would get you a bit more gain, especially at the lower frequencies that you'll eventually end up using. (Sooner rather than later if Three Rock actually comes in better for you.)

Usually, the higher the aerial is positioned, the better, & don't have it pointing through anything metallic or containing water.

A couple of bits of string will usually do for a 'mount'.

An amplifier on an indoor aerial is a waste of time, money, and electricity. All it will do is amplify the noise. An amplifier is designed to go at he start of a long run of cable which you don't have on an indoor aerial.
