After one too many dropping incidents, my old hairdryer has died. I got it as a gift years ago and don't remember the make or specs. I don't use it that frequently (maybe every few weeks) but I would like to be able to straighten my long thick hair with it as well as drying my hair. What are the specs to look for? Do watts affect the speed of the drying- so the higher the wattage the faster, etc.? I have no idea what to look for. My budget is about €40 and I have a Terrisales locally if that makes a difference. Thanks!

You're best spending an extra 20 euro and getting one of these.

By far the most powerful thing you'll find for the price. It's the same as they use in the salons. Will last forever too. My wife and her friends swear by them. She has thick, curly long hair.

As a hair professional, I use Parlux as it’s lightweight, powerful and very reliable.
However, if you’re only using it occasionally, this is my back up hairdryer and one I take on holiday with me. I’ve had mine years.

Parlux are brilliant although the hefty price tag doesn't really get near to the OP's budget

I posted a similar question before Christmas here (https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057816538) and I got some really great help.

In the end, I bought the ETI from Peter Marks for about €70 and my sister thinks it’s brilliant. She has really thick wavy hair like me and I was impressed at how much straighter hers was after using the hairdryer for just a finger dry.
