When ringing ahead to get the timing belt and water pump replaced, would garages have the parts at hand generally to do it straightaway or would they have to order them in? I’m no expert, but presume there are a lot of different types of belts out there for different car brands and then for the different models as well?

A main dealer would probably have them in stock, an independent would more likely have to order the parts. But they would get them either the same day or next day if necessary.
