Should I buy a diesel?

    Hi all

I'm in the market for a new car. I currently own a 10 year old Audi A4 which is diesel. As I drive long motorway miles for work it makes sense to buy another diesel. I'm looking at a 2015 bmw 520d m sport low miles high spec so around 30k all in. Because of the cloud currently over diesels cars I'm not sure if this is the right move. I'm terrified that the government will introduce levies on diesels and that the value of car will be wiped out. I would like to know I will get a good price for the car should I move it on in a few years. What are people's thought on this?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah work away. Diesel is the norm for this segment. The gov won’t do anything of the sort as diesel is so popular.

Diesel offers far best Avg MPG and isnt going anywhere for foreseeable future, despite what we are being told...

It has been getting bad press in recent years due to its link with peoples health. Major cities like Madrid and Paris are banning diesel cars totally from 2025 I think. Total ban.

Governments will have to be seen to be doing something about a fuel that is linked to ill health. I'd say the Irish Gov won't want to rock the boat too much as they pushed the sale of diesel cars in the last 10yrs+, so they will gradually make them less appealing.

It'll be small increases in fuel duty, VRT, road tax to begin with. Eventually this will get through the minds of the population, and they will naturally drift back towards petrol cars.

If it was me I would buy diesel. No matter what politicians want you to think they can never get rid of diesel.
When you make Jet fuel the only product that can be made out of the by-product of jet fuel is diesel. If they get rid of diesel they will have a huge waste problem which is definitely worse for the environment.
I think the whole PR thing around diesel is just to keep inner city people and activists happy. They never tell you about the other side of it.

Didn't say there will never be any more diesel, just no more diesel cars.

Probably still be allowed for hgv and a few other categories. But not passenger vehicles.

Diesel passenger vehicles will still have a purpose for a good while yet especially with those who drive for a living.

Am also in the same boat - have a 2010 A6 and need to upgrade but fearful of changes to diesel cost. I think i will still upgrade to hopefully a 2015 A6 diesel as there is no alternative electric at the moment (wish there was btw). So getting the 2010 NCT'd soon and then trying to sell private, hope to UK for the upgrade. Then in a few years there might be a suitable electric alternative.

Yeah going up north myself. I think we'll be fine. Suppose just keep a close eye on how things progress. I won't let the mileage rack up like my last car I will look to move on the new car in 2-3 years.
