Do you change oil more often in a car with higher mileage

I have an 04 1.2 polo which has 102k miles on it, the service interval says every 10k but now that the engine has gone over 100k I'm wondering should I be changing oil and filter at 7.5 or even 5k, What do you guys think?

Any car I owned I made the habit of changing oil + filter every 7 thousand miles even though BMW say 18000 miles for the Oil and change the Filter every second service.

Stick to the service schedule just keep a check on the oil level every now and again. No benefit of putting an extra cost on yourself.

Change it earlier if you don't trust yourself to do it on time...
so when you're late for your "early" change you 'll be on-time for the right time

I away follow tech specification. I change oil at every 12 months or 10,000 Km whichever comes first with good quality fully synthetic oil + oil filter. My car seems to love this.

For older (around 15 years or so) cars I change oil every summer, and use 10W-40*

Once a year should be grand enough unless you're doing huge miles. And just check the oil every once in a while and top up if needed.

What make you use 10W ? Are you considering about oil burning due to worn out piston rings ?

The theory is that thicker oil won't seep/leak as easily as a thinner oil.
I don't recommend it but haven't had issues doing it either.

Would you recommend 10w 40 for an older 1.6tdci with a bit of wear on the engine?
I've always used 10w 40 on my other cars and motorbikes(tho they were all 90,s bikes/cars)

    As I said, I don't recommend it.
If you think it's worth a shot then by all means go ahead.

    I don't get this 10W40 chat?

    It's what's recommended for mine.

Yes, different cars use different types of oil.
The can of worms I opened above is when you switch oil based on that the car is getting on in years and the components starts to wear.

I was wondering did you recognise any difference in fuel consumption when switching to the thicker oil ? I heard that a car would use more fuel when it had a thicker oil. Never tested in my 10 years old car.

I did not experience a noticeable change in MPG but did not look for this specifically.
At the time I was doing mainly city driving so was using up a lot of juice anyway.

Would just add the advice to go with the oil-spec recommended for a car. e.g. on my own 1.9TDI 130BHP PD it's a VW 505.01 spec oil (or newer 507).
Those oils are generally (or all) 5W30.
However there are plenty of 5W30 oils that do not meet the appropriate VW spec (but which are fine oils, and fit for many other VAG engines).

All I'm saying is that the viscosity numbers and brand names aren't the only things people should look at: they should also look at the oil specification.

"No way" BMW have even changed their oil service to a much lower figure

The right spec oil is crucial for the 1.6tdci. 10w40 won't cut it with those.

You can stick to 10k it will be fine. Although like another poster I too change the oil at 7k miles just for good practice but in your case there is absolutely no need to.

Service schedules are becoming joke to make fleet managers happy. For me it is a year or 10K miles with good quality oil.

I got blue smoke last year because of oil burning. I took out pistons and changed piston rings straightaway and smoke stopped. Do you think if I used a thicker oil 10W-40 rather than 5W-30, the smoke would disappear ?

Spent over 150 EUR for rings/head gasket/valve seals from Toyota dealer and fully one day to do the job. I wish I tried 10W-40 before doing to see how it was :(

I don't know; maybe it would have helped, maybe not.
Tbh, changing the rings is probably a better solution in the long run.

What's the difference in our cases , you must have some reason to change at 7k if you bother?

If they did they didn't inform me and there the ones servicing my car every time...think it's 30k for every oil change in mine...so 2 oil changes every 18mts. It's enough.

A 10k interval is not big and the difference between doing it at 7k and 10k is negligible. The only reason I do it at 7k is because that is what I've always done.

Have you guys ever used any engine flush additive when oil changed? I heard that to use this kind of thing might damage our engine. I too used this a couple of time but have not found anything yet. may happen after years?

No never, it's not recommend for higher mileage engines, above 70k afaik. I've just never believed in it. Instead I think keeping the oil in the engine fresh is the best way to go.

I Change the oil on my Audi A6 Avant AWX every 8000 Kms
    505.01
348000 kilometres and she stills runs perfect,1250/1350 a tank at 70 litres of the diesel

Just my opinion the price of oil is cheaper than getting major engine work done
I dont think people understand how vital it is to have oil changed regulary

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,172 ✭✭✭EPAndlee

I change my oil every 8 thousand. Oil is changed at least twice a year with every second service changing all filters and oil

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭audiavantawx

I usually change the oil and oil filter and air filter together every 8000kms
Every third service i change the fuel filter and pollen filter
Usually 3 services every 12 months

Service parts can be picked up so cheap online now that its madness not to change them

I rather keep an old car and keep it right than buy the new ones

That's great mileage. I'm on an AWX engined A6 (saloon) and I'd say I'm getting about 1100 (6.3 l / 100 km) average. I do a lot of motorway miles too.

Not sure what to look at to change that (already try to drive more economically with respect to acceleration and speed etc.,)

Same myself, mostly motorway, stick to the 100/120 speed, anything over that and your going to start burning diesel.

Like I said, regular services, keep the tyres up to pressure, odd drop of dipetane on long runs, get diesel in the same garage all the time.I always brim the tank, fuel filter is spotless after 24/30000 kilometres .nothing in the car that shouldn't be and a wash and wax once every week if possible.Egr valve is blocked and I have a drain hole in bottom part of intercooler to drain blowpass oil,I empty at every service.keep s an eye on access oil in intercooler to avoid runaway.

    Sorry for the essay :-)
