To illustrate what I'm talking about here,

Dell has sold machines with 5 year warranties.

So, should software companies sell software for a big initial outlay, and offer support for that 5 years?

I do not see the connection at all.
Dell is not a software company.

Software will be supported for as long as it is deemed viable by the creators.
They could, if they thought it advantageous, support the software for 5 years ...... but that has little to do with hardware manufacturers.
