staining a chair

Hi all, I have sanded and stained an old chair over Christmas. New to this - I have one coat of stain on (Johnstone's). I'm happy with the colour coverage but do I need to give it a second coat of stain to give it a bit of endurance? It's an upholstered wing back armchair so it's just the arms and legs but I'm thinking the more coats of stain I put on the more likely I am to mess it up! I do intend to varnish it as well.

Colour is the colour, more stain will make it darker, so it's up to you. Need to choose the lacquer or varnish with properties to prevent fade for you!
