Mould inside walls

I have some black mould in the kitchen of my apartment, it's in a 100 yr old building. I've been treating it with mould remover and painting over it, but a friend has told me that it's more than likely inside the walls at this stage and I'd be better just moving if I can. Can mould infiltrate walls?
