    Hi,

I have creaking floors which isn't a massive issue however need to get some new carpet upstairs.

Obviously a good underlay is required however probably a good time to tackle this issue and get some of the flooring looked at.

Under is a sections of plywood not floorboards in tongue and groove.

Would carpet fitters provide some service here or would I need someone else and be a 2 phase job?

ply probably not screwed down enough.
if you knew 100% there was no wires or pipes then add more screws but you can never be 100%

you will have to take up the ply and see what's there. then mark the joists and screw it back down. screw every 150mm long the joists
make sure to use proper screws or the job. flooring or deck screws. other screws aren't designed for that job and can break allowing the ply to move and squeak

    ^^

As this man says. If you're getting carpets replaced, it's probably a good time anyway to inspect the ply for damage and sagging and have it replaced where necessary. When we were looking at houses, I recall virtually all of the houses with plywood floors had damaged areas from leaks, major spills, dropped furniture, etc.

Also, before doing the new ply if any, etc, consider if you want to change any wiring etc.

This reminds me of being in my teenage years when my mother was getting new carpets in the hall, stairs and landing. With my father having recently passed and my mother commenting on how the floors were so squeaky, I saw this as a good opportunity to perform some manly tasks. All was going well until about the fourth or fifth nail, which pierced a water pipe. Chaos ensued, so yeah, check before you dig as the ESB say.

Got someone out to do it as I was afraid of pipes and guess what he hit a ****ing pipe to the radiator.
