Win7 Update caused incomplete boot

I have W7 HP/64 installed on a Gigabyte board with a Q6600 and an Nvidia GT640. It runs 24/7 running Folding@Home in the cooler months, to take the chill off the room. I might turn on the display once a day. There's no irreplaceable data on it.
Yesterday I decided to let it install some updates, finished up the F@H work, and shut it down.
Today, in either start normally, safe mode, last known good config, or startup repair, it will only give me a blank screen plus a movable mouse pointer.
Anything else I should try before I just reinstall from scratch?

You could grab a Windows 7 disc and try a repair.

    Third option.

Out of interest, have you ever priced how much it's costing you to leave a computer folding 24/7? With an actual meter I mean? Can't imagine it's cheap!

If you live in an apartment that only has electric heating it's practically free at this time of year.

And indeed I do. I have storage heaters but don't use them. I also have night rate esb. The F@H means the fan heater doesn't come on as much and I get something other than heat for the money.

I tried the W7 disc option, I also tried changing the graphics card. No joy so far, I will prob go for the re-install, onto a bigger hdd, as it was tiny.
