I have an android tablet and it has a folder or app called files. when i open that i can browse the tablet but i can also see the windows network and then browse the network and see content of any shared foders on the computers and save a copy to the tablet. This was not on my other tablet or my current phone as far as i can see.it does not have an app called files. would it be called something else? Should i have that facility, I do not know much about android

Try the Zenui File Manager from Asus on the Playstore. It's free and i think it can do what you are seeking. I believe it is the file explorer that comes with Asus tablets. (You didn't mention the brand. Was your other tablet an Asus perhaps?)

Personally i use a paid app called ES File Explorer Pro to browse Windows networks, so can say with certainty that it works. There is also a free version of ES File Explorer that can browse Windows networks, but beware, it had a lot of junkware and ads the last time i tried it. The Pro version for me is worth the 3 quid to avoid that.

The protocol used for Windows networks file sharing systems is called Samba (shortened to "smb" when used in network address starting with smb:// , kinda like webpages start with http:// or https://) So that (Samba) is basically the technical name of what your file manager needs to support to achieve what you want.
    Hope this helped.
