What’s the story with the current 7 seat xtrail ? Good and bad, thinking of buying a 16 or 17 one, basic 1.6 diesal. would be used for transporting kids and a bit of occasional light towing. Thanks in advance !!!

Should be fine for all that. They're great value for money as long as you're not expecting it to be more than it is.

Have a 7 seater one I brought in from NI. The 1.6 is grand for cruising at 130-140kph on the motorway but struggles a bit after that. Boot is tiny with all 7 seats up but big when all are dropped. Last row of seats have zero leg room. Gearbox always feels clunky to me. Have done 50k kms with no issues. Compared to other 7 seater 'jeeps' they are good value.

As a 7 Seater SUV they are about as small as you'll get. Exceptionally tight third row and very dificult to access if you need to buckle a kid etc. Second row would not take my 2 child seats and a booster (by comparison, a Renault Megane SW could take them). I did find the 1.6 fine though and not underpowered. I only had it as a 2 week hire in Portugal, but I also test drove one before buying a 5008 instead. The main deal breaker for me was size (at the time of testing) which was long before the hire car. For a family of 5 with three young kids it was simply too tight.
Its a shame you are looking at 16 or 17, much better competition now. Having said that I have no idea what they go for and would imagine the newer competition are more expensive.

It's basically a stretched Qashqai and shares the same platform as the Renault Koleos. The 3rd row of seats are really for occasional use and more suited to children than adults.

i am also looking to buy an xtrail, family of 4 currently with 1 on the way.

Does anyone know if one of the seats in the 3rd row folds over would a double buggy slot in on its side folded?

    Cheers

Probably would, but personally speaking I'd proceed with caution. Bazz has pointed out that the 3rd row is for occasional use, of which I'd agree, but I'd also say that the 3rd row in the 5008, Touran, G Picasso etc are for occasional use also. The difference being that the X-Trail is smaller again and very difficult to access. Life with 3 kids is all about practicality and making life easy for yourself, OH and kids. I think that Renault were correct not making the Koleos a 7 seater (the X-Trail equivalent). The car IMO is simply not big enough. But hey, thats my opinion and experience. Flip side is I know a couple that own a Qashqai and have 3 young kids also. I dont know how they do it, but they dont moan about it!

My advice is that when you are car shopping bring the double buggy with you to check.
