Mondeo shuddering

    My 07 Mondeo 1.8 TDCI started shuddering or chucking whilst driving on open roads before Christmas. I could be traveling along at 80kmph with the clutch out and all of a sudden it vibrates and sometimes aggressively like it was about to run out of fuel. I drove 380km yesterday across the country and the car chucked alot but then nothing for 100km until it chucked again. The car is always full with fuel. I had a mechanic "blow out" the tank today but it did nothing. He suggested removing the tank to check for dirt.

    Anyone know what could be happening here? Thanks

    Could be a lot of things, sensors etc. Has the fuel filter been changed ?

    Might be a fault with the sender pump at the fuel tank, loose connection etc?

    Had the car plugged in this morning, it's coming up that both injector 1 and 4 have faults. Mechanic said I needed two new ones that could cost between 200 and 400 each!! I said I would get them reconditioned as the car is now 11 years old and worth nothing but he said reconditioned injectors are useless?

    In your particular case he is right IMO. We have also found that the type of Siemens injectors fitted to those 1.8TDCI engines aren't really suitable for repair. I once had to get 3 recon injectors for a 2008 Mondeo before I got one that worked properly. We now only fit new ones for that reason.

    Well done on finding out what is wrong with the car. That is a positive result.

    He's probably right WRT reconditioned injectors. However if two are failing, there is a distinct possibility that the other two could fail fairly soon. So you may require to replace all 4 instead of just two?

    Ford are probably the best make to get spare parts quickly.

    Given the fact that your vehicle is 11 years old, it's resale value is very much reduced and putting money into a older vehicle does become a conundrum which many of us face.

    The way I see it.... you have a few choices.

    1). Buy the replacement parts (either 2 or 4 injectors) and keep the car going for another 2 years etc, provided that other consumable items (clutch, tyres, brakes etc) have another 2 years of life in them. Putting new parts into a older car only makes sense if you are going to keep it.

    2). Trade in the car for another Ford, tell the garage that 2 injectors require changing etc, but otherwise the car is good. Sometimes a garage will cut a good deal for returning customers, as they want to keep / expand a happy customer base.

    3). Sell the car on the OM as it is, perhaps somebody out here will be looking for that type of car and can get it up and running a not much cost to themselves etc.

    Either way you are going to have to spend money, either 1500e all in for new injectors + labour or several times that to trade up the car for something else.

    Thank you for such a brilliant overview. It was incredibly helpful.

    I have since visited my local ford dealer and purchased two brand new injectors at the cost of €477. However following your advice and that of the mechanic and main dealer, I have decided to replace all 4 injectors which will cost just under 1k alone. I have not been given a price for labour but I'm assuming it will be €500.

    Obviously I've decided to keep the car on as upgrading will cost me much more and hopefully I can get another two years out of it. I sincerely hope I am making the right decision and that replacing all the injectors will rectify the issue. It's been a sting to start into the new year with such a staggering repair bill for an 11 year old car which exceeds the value of the car itself but it's the only way I know how to proceed.
