    Hiya,

I'm applying for a job with the local etb office and on the application form it s says that I have to provide two references, one from my current employer.

Are they within their rights to ask for a reference from my current employer as I feel that this may cause me some grief if my boss finds out I'm thinking of leaving him.

    Thanks.

They are within their rights to ask, there is no law against this. You do not have to provide the reference, but they do not not have to consider you for the job without it.

Usually you would leave this blank. If you are successful in getting the new role, the offer is made to you under condition of your reference check. If your happy with it all, you give them current employer details all then you hang in your notice.

Any decent company won't contact a current employer until they've made you an offer.

Thanks Folks for replying, I'll probably add in an extra sheet with current employer details and ask them not to contact unless I'm being considered for the position.

I wouldn't even give the details in case some one calls any way. Better to be safe than sorry.
